What are Polycarbonate Sunglasses?

Looking for a new pair of shades? Seeing all these terms being thrown at you like all of us are suppose to be experts in the field. If you are like me I just want a pair that will last a decent amount of time, protect my eyes and not cost an arm an a leg to accomplish that. One of those terms you may have seen several times by now is polycarbonate. What is that? What does it have to do with sunglasses? Why should I care? Well I hope to answer all those questions and make it simple.

To keep this short and sweet I will break it down to simple bullet like points and key points. Polycarbonate lenses are lightweight, shatter proof in nature and used in safety glasses and use to be used in aviation. Just those properties make it a great material for sunglasses. Now this is also the reason why you do not see polycarbonate sunglasses in the dollar store, they are just too expensive for those stores but they are well worth the extra cost.

Now why would you want to have polycarbonate lens sunglasses? What make it better then whatever they use at the dollar store? First thing they are shatter proof, for me that is a key selling point. With a three year old it has to withstand some crazy circumstances.

Okay now are you wondering where you can get these said polycarboante sunglasses? Well we offer them silly. One thing that stands us apart from other manufacturers is that we bake the UV protection right into the lens because of how you make the lenses it is quite simple. The biggest benefit about having the UV protection backed it is that it will now rub off through normal use. Also our sunglasses are UV400 which means it blocks 100% UVA and UVB radiation so you know your eyes are protected.

Now there is quite a bit more detail about polycarbonate and its properties and how it is made into sunglass lenses but Like I said I wanted to keep this simple and short.

Aviator Polarized Sunglasses

What exactly are polarized sunglasses? What are they good for? What advantage do they have over regular sunglasses? Is there a specific use for them? Are polarized sunglasses worth it?

So many questions and surprisingly not that many people know much about them besides the fact that that most of the time polarized sunglasses are priced higher than regular sunglasses so we assume they are better right? Well it is true they are better for most people since they offer many great benefits and no negatives that I know of. In this blog post you find information to help educate you on the wonderful invention of the polarized lens for sunglasses and why it is awesome.

Athena Polarized SunglassesFor quick history lesson about polarized lenses to get an idea where it all come from. Don’t worry I will keep it short and sweet to not bore you too much. Polarized lenses were first made available in 1936 by a man named Edwin Land when he started experimenting with his patented Polaroid filter to make lenses for sunglasses of real use. That’s it, that’s the history lesson. Told you I would keep it short and sweet since history is not the point I am trying to get across it is what the benefits they offer.

Now what benefits do polarized sunglasses really offer? You maybe are asking yourself at this point. Well for starters they improve comfort and visibility by reducing glare reflected at angles off shiny non-metallic surfaces. One great example of that situation is off the water on the lake. Also another example is the light reflected off the surface of the road. Both of those can be very hazardous and dangerous. Now why does it cause glare? It causes glare because when the light reflects off those surfaces it is usually horizontally polarized which means instead of the light scattering in all directions, it is reflected back horizontally. This reflection can cause dangerous intensities of light, also know as glare.

Now what can we do to prevent that? Or how can polarized sunglasses help prevent glare? They can stop glare because the lenses contain a special filter that blocks that reflected light, thus reducing glare that reaches your eye. These sunglasses can also be worn indoors by people that are light sensitive as well.

Now why are polarized sunglasses more expensive? Well simply put they are just more expensive for that type of lens over polycarbonate, and plastic lenses.

Who would benefit most from these type of sunglasses? Well anyone would benefit from Retro Polarized Sunglassespolarized sunglasses. But specifically those who like to fish would greatly benefit since the glare would be reduced and they will have the higher chance to see where the fish are. Another use would be while you are driving you will no longer have that annoying and dangerous glare in the distance. Those are two of many other uses polarized sunglasses have.

Summary

  • First Available in 1936
  • Reduces Glare Reflected off Water and Roads
  • More expensive but worth it.
  • Great for drivers and fishers.
